FFYLP
Fogarty Foundation Youth Leadership Program
The Fogarty Foundation Youth Leadership Program (FFYLP) was initiated in 2000 and aims to develop youth leaders who become proactive forces within their communities. The program encourages young people between the ages of 14 – 25 to act as community role models whilst educating and equipping them with the necessary skills and confidence to raise youth awareness of alcohol and other drug related harm and issues amongst their peers.
The three main aims of the FFYLP are:
- To develop youth leaders who act as positive role models within local communities;
- To educate young people about alcohol and other drug issues; and
- To equip young people with the skills and knowledge to develop and implement alcohol and drug free youth events.
The FFYLP primarily consists of a two day workshop, during which time participants are given the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills in a range of areas. Upon completing the workshop, the youth then go back to their schools and communities and commence working on a drug and alcohol free youth event or project.
With ongoing support from both the Local Drug Action Group in the community as well as the FFYLP Program Officer, the graduates are encouraged to continue exercising their pro-activity by way of community action and quite often choose to join up with the existing Local Drug Action Group or form their own youth based Local Drug Action Group.
Our challenge is to continue to find ways which support and encourage young people to work alongside and lead us in the response to alcohol and other drug issues in our community.
The Fogarty Foundation Youth Leadership Program is a successful and widely respected program, with graduates going on to participate in a range of community projects as well as some going on to pursue careers in related fields.
Since its inception, over 500 young people have participated in the training program representing 40 regional and 25 metropolitan communities throughout the state demonstrating the will of young people to be involved in community issues.
The FFYLP is coordinated by Local Drug Action Groups Inc. For enquiries or further information on the program please contact LDAG Inc. on ldaginc@health.wa.gov.au or call 1800 LDAG 07 (1800 5324 07).
